Description

Wood Sprite, 1931
Driftwood on ebony

Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall M. Fredericks
1994.004

During his early years as an artist, Fredericks carved several tall thin figures in wood. A few were carved from old fence posts the artist acquired.

This wood sprite, a mythical creature that lived in the woods and personified the spirit of nature, has stylized facial features similar to those found in some African art. On her left shoulder are a child and a chimpanzee. Throughout his career, Fredericks used children, chimpanzees, baboons, and other animals often together in a single sculpture like the Boy and the Bear, to suggest the close bonds that bind living things together.
