Dublin Core

Title

Urban Hansen, Medallion, [Plaster and Clay]

Subject

Figure sculpture, American--20th century

Description

Portrait of Urban Hansen plaster blank mounted on plywood, oil-based clay, wax letters, metal letters. The clay has leaked some of the oil from the clay onto the surface of the relief.

Fredericks sculpted this portrait of Urban Hansen, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen. Along with Fredericks, he was instrumental in the establishment of DIADEM (Disabled Americans Denmark Meeting, an exchange program between Denmark and the US for disabled young adults).

He began this model with a circular plaster blank form and then sculpted the oil-based clay portrait to the surface. He then applied other elements to the surface such as metal and wax letters and leaves with berry motifs. Graphite guide lines are still visible. Oil-like marks on the surface of the clay are the result of a chemical reaction from metal underneath the clay.
