Title
Romance of Transportation, Jets, Mold, [Plaster]
Description
Transportation by Man (Jets), plaster mold with iron rods, and galvanized pipe. Mold is stained from the shellac used to seal the mold.
This multiple-piece aluminum installation was made for the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services and the Ohio Department of Transportation, Columbus, Ohio in 1965. This Jets section represents traveling forward into the future like airplanes over the mountains; it is actually a series of three stylized planes that resemble arrows. According to Fredericks "Transportation by Man expresses movement in man and shows the evolution of transportation from primitive beasts of burden to the modern expressway."
The entire sculptural installation is made of four individual sections; Recreational Activities, Transportation by Man, Motion in Nature, and Industry and Other Employment Activities.
This plaster section of Transportation by Man shows a thin layer of blued plaster. The discoloration is shellac on the surface as a releasing agent when making the model. Iron rods and piping are used for reinforcement on the reverse side.
The sculpture in its entirety can be viewed on pages 164-165 in Marshall M. Fredericks, Sculptor.
