Spirit Plaza

In 2017, the city of Detroit closed Woodward Avenue between Jefferson Avenue and Larned Street to create a 20,000 square foot “civic square” in front of The Spirit of Detroit. This walkable public space, currently in pilot stage, is intended to increase civic engagement while celebrating the diversity of Detroit.

Detroit, Sept 23 -- A PRESENTATION TO THE PRESIDENT -- President Nixon is presented a small replica of the "Spirit of Detroit" [sic] by Detroit's mayor Roman Gribbs, as the president arrived in Detroit late Thursday to address the Economic Club. The "Spirit of Detroit" [sic] is a large statue at the entrance of the City-County building in Detroit.
