Stevens studied at Colby College, Waterville, Maine (B.A., 1899) and Yale University (Ph.D., 1903). He taught English for many years at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland (1905-24), and then successively was the headmaster of Roger Ascham School, White Plains, New York (1924-27); headmaster of Cranbrook School, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (1927-35); and dean of the School of Literature and Journalism, Oglethorpe University (1936-37). Out of his interest in parapsychology, Stevens joined the American Society for Psychosis Research. He wrote many books on naval history and other subjects, including psychic research. A graduate of Colby College with a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1903, he taught English at the U.S. Naval Academy for twenty years before his tenure at Cranbrook from 1927 to 1935. He was the author of many books, and a great conversationalist. Kate Bromley, a member of the Cranbrook community who chronicled its life in her unpublished journal, said he had "the gift to express himself in the most trenchant as well as subtle fashion." Fredericks 1994.012 Aitken was a student with Fredericks at the Cleveland School of Art. Fredericks was enrolled there 1928 1930. This is one of the earliest portrait busts known by Fredericks. He modeled the naturalistic portrayal in terra cotta, which was then fired in a kiln. Aitken also worked in clay. He was noted for his ceramic sculptures that were exhibited in Cleveland and New York City in the early 1930s. He was also renowned as an outdoors man and a sports writer. Exhibited above this display case are the full-size plaster models for the reliefs while the full-size plaster model of Ford (1863-1947) stands nearby. Fredericks 1994.004 During his early years as an artist, Fredericks carved several tall thin figures in wood. A few were carved from old fence posts the artist acquired. This wood sprite, a mythical creature that lived in the woods and personified the spirit of nature, has stylized facial features similar to those found in some African art. On her left shoulder are a child and a chimpanzee. Throughout his career, Fredericks used children, chimpanzees, baboons, and other animals often together in a single sculpture like the Boy and the Bear, to suggest the close bonds that bind living things together. Fredericks 1994.003 Fredericks executed several woodcarving during the early part of his career. He made this sculpture, possibly during his senior year, at the Cleveland School of Art. Note the varying degrees of finish in the portrait. The head is worked in greater detail than the lower portions of the sculpture, and the bark of the tree is left intact around the bottom. A large crack down the back of the sculpture was filled with wood shims at the time of carving. This is the only portrait Fredericks is known to have carved in wood. The subject is unknown.
