Description An account of the resource In this plaster model, Fredericks portrays Eastern culture with a god identified as Buddha. Leaning over his shoulder is the monkey god, Hanuman, who symbolizes loyalty, courage and strength. In the center of the sculpture is the elephant-headed god Ganesh. To his left are two figures kneeling in prayer. The head and neck of a bull form the left end of the sculpture. Considered a sacred animal in India, Hindus view the bull as a symbol of fertility and plenty. Fredericks gained appreciation of Indian culture while stationed in India during World War II. Fredericks 1991.109 The style of this relief differs from the other works in the Museum. It is very detailed because the Seal of the United States is a standard design. It was established in 1782 to symbolize sovereignty. The American eagle, with an escutcheon, or shield, on its breast, symbolizes self-reliance. The thirteen vertical stripes on the escutcheon came from the flag of 1777. The eagle grasps an olive branch with 13 leaves and 13 olives in its right talon and 13 arrows in its left. (13 represent the number of US states in 1777.) It prefers to live in peace but can wage war. In its beak is a scroll. It is not inscribed here but it is usually inscribed "E pluribus unum", or "One out of many". Above its head is the 13-star "new constellation" of the 1777 flag, enclosed in a glory, or golden radiance, breaking through a cloud. The relief was cast in aluminum and is located at the American Embassy in London, England. Plaster, galvanized pipe, sisal, and three plaster mold rims. The yellowish discoloring is from shellac used to seal the plaster. Fredericks created a Rendition of the Great Seal of the United States for the American Embassy in London, England. This mold shows the intricate detail of the original clay model along with its three rims. The plaster model made from this mold is on display in the Main Exhibit Gallery on the east wall. The use of shellac as a releasing agent discolors the surface. Note that the crack above the constellation of 13 stars and darker area in the olive branch foliage are filled in with darker clay. The reverse side shows plaster mixed with sisal, a stiff plant fiber that holds it to the piping. The piping acts as an armature or support structure. Great Seal symbols include the eagle, official symbol of the US that means power and strength; 13 stars forming a constellation, denotes a new State taking place and rank among other sovereign powers; the shield of 13 stripes for the 13 original colonies; the olive branch which notes the power of peace; the 13 arrows denote the power of war; a cloud around the constellation, expressive of divine presence and command; 13 stripes, arrows, and stars represent the 13 original colonies.
