Main Exhibit Gallery Provenance 05/26/1994 gifted to MFSM Notes This is the plaster model for the INDIAN AND FOUR WILD SWANS which is mounted on the facade of the Milwaukee Public Museum. The entire composition spans an area of 36 feet. There is only one swan in this composition. Fredericks uses the figure of the swan in many of his sculptures. The significance of the swan has varied between cultures over the centuries, however Fredericks uses it to symbolize eternal life. This is also what it symbolizes to the Indians. They believe that when a person dies their soul flies up on the back of the swan to the Great Spirit. This special bond is conveyed in this sculpture by the spatial relationship between the Indian and the swan. It is also revealed in the position of the Indian's body and arms which suggest veneration. Located in a display case across the gallery is a small-scale maquette of the entire composition as it appears in Milwaukee. The first firm date we have for Two Bears is 1964. I asked both Molly and Mr. Fredericks if the composition was created before 1964 and they both said no. I did not mention the reference in the Kate Bromley Papers. There is a small-scale Two Bears at the Royal Oak Public Library. In their biography file on Fredericks there is a memo that states that Fredericks gave it to the library in 1962. At a later date I asked Mr. Fredericks about this. He said that is was correct. He made the small-scale in 1962 before completing the full-scale in 1964. I asked him if the small-scale was done any earlier than 1962 and he said no." From a memo dated September 18, 1991: "RE: Two Bears small-scale at Quarton Elementary School in Birmingham They have a small-scale bronze dated 1967. Fredericks 1994.051 The body language of EVE reveals her inner conflict as she gazes down at the bright, shiny apple. EVE stands in an unbalanced, almost awkward pose. Her head tilts in a quizzical manner. Her shoulders and breasts are uneven. Her torso and hips are twisted slightly and she is not centered on the pedestal. EVE is a good example of Fredericks' expressive use of the nude figure. The sculptor used this female form as a model for the larger figure in the MOTHER AND CHILD or TWO SISTERS group. (The maquette for the two figure group is near the north wall; the life-size plaster is at the feet of CHRIST.) Throughout history sculptors have reused successful compositions as the basis for other work. Fredericks 1994.050 Black Elk (1863-1950) was a holy man of the Ogallala Sioux and a spiritual leader for all North American Indians. Black Elk Speaks, an account of his life and of the Ogallala Sioux has become like a Bible for all North American Indians of the twentieth century. This sculpture is a sketch model for a proposed fifteen-foot high monument to be placed in the foothills of Nebraska. Black Elk grasps the sacred pipe which was given to his ancestors to insure that they would multiply and be a good nation. He points it upward and gazes skyward as he gives a prayer of thanks to the Great Spirit for the buffalo. The Sioux are profoundly dependent on the buffalo and the hunt. The physical closeness of Black Elk with the buffalo at his feet suggests the spiritual closeness the Sioux feel with the buffalo.
