Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Painting, American--20th century Description An account of the resource Gouache and charcoal on board 24" x 32" The idea to create a memorial honoring Henry Ford took root in 1948 when the Dearborn, Michigan Chamber of Commerce conducted a poll of Dearborn residents and learned that most of the populace favored such a proposal. The Dearborn Chamber of Commerce initiated a fundraising drive to finance a life-size full-length bronze of the auto magnate and commissioned Marshall Fredericks to design the sculpture. Fredericks’ original model for the memorial consisted of a sixty-year-old Henry Ford standing with one hand on the shoulder of a teenage boy and the other hand pointing towards the future. Although approved by the Ford family, Fredericks never executed the design, as fundraising proved to be difficult, causing the project to be put on hold. In 1967, almost twenty years after the original proposal, the Inter-Service Club Council of Dearborn revived the project, calling upon residents of the city to raise funds for the monument through public subscription. Unfortunately many Dearborn residents thought that the teenage boy in the model was Edsel Ford, Henry Ford’s son, and not a representation of Henry Ford in his youth, as the artist intended. Although a historically inaccurate assumption, the confusion persisted, causing the Henry Ford Statue Committee to scrap the original concept in favor of a new design. Located at the Henry Ford Centennial Library, the final memorial is a life-size bronze figure of Henry Ford in his familiar pose, standing with his hands in his pockets, situated at the center of a serpentine marble wall. At the memorial’s unveiling in 1975, Fredericks remarked “This pose, the thoughtful look, represents him in the best way. I like to see him thinking.” Intended to tell the story of Ford’s life, bronze reliefs depicting his early childhood, adolescence and the growth of the Ford Empire accompany the central figure. The reverse side of the memorial features three engraved quotations attributed to this legendary innovator. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Gouache and ink on board 18.5" x 27.5" Cast in bronze in 1955, this relief depicts a flock of seven foreshortened sheep staring straight ahead at the viewer. Two smaller sheep, possibly lambs, are included in the bottom right hand corner. Fredericks incorporated a great deal of detail in each of the sheep, especially in their fluffy wool coats. In the English language the phrase “black sheep” is an expression used to describe an unusual or disgraceful member of a group, especially within one’s family. In the presentation drawing for Sheep (The Guests Have Arrived), Fredericks includes one black sheep among the herd of white sheep. However, in its final form, Fredericks chose not to incorporate any wayward black sheep in the relief. Instead he opted to apply a uniform green patina to its surface. Fredericks used a similar sheep design when creating the gold anodized aluminum relief for the Central United Methodist Church in Waterford, Michigan. Christ the Good Shepherd features five sheep comparable to those found in Sheep (The Guests Have Arrived). Completed ten years after Sheep (The Guests Have Arrived), Fredericks indisputably drew inspiration for the church project from this earlier work. Eaton Corporation Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Gouache and ink on drawing paper 7.5" x 9.5" The Eaton Manufacturing Company in Cleveland, Ohio commissioned this memorial in honor of the employees who died in World War II. A marble wall inscribed with the names of those employees who gave their lives for their country holds the bronze relief. The eagle is the most prominent element. The simplified details of the eagle's body and feathers are typical of Fredericks’ style. The face and obverse of the medallion are visible in the relief. The eagle’s talons grasp an olive branch and arrows signifying a capacity for both peace and war. On the obverse of the medallion, encircling the inscription is a laurel branch on the left and an oak branch on the right. These signify victory and strength. Fredericks also designed a medallion for the Eaton Manufacturing Corporation in 1948.
