Description An account of the resource The Roman god Mercury was a messenger for the gods and patron of racing and athletes. His special duty was to conduct the souls of the dead to the underworld. In time he also became the Roman god of commerce and merchants. His attributes were winged sandals, a winged cap or petasus and the caduceus, a winged staff with two serpents coiled around it. The Mercury Division of the Ford Motor Company commissioned this sculpture in 1959 to promote the 1960 Mercury. Cast in nickel, Ford Motor Company used the sculpture for advertising. The polished nickel Mercury sculptures are located at the Benson Ford Research Center on the campus of The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Fredericks often used swans in his sculptures to symbolize eternal life. The hand of God enfolds the spirit of man as he takes the wings of the morning. The upward flowing contours communicate the optimistic spiritual content of the sculpture. Fredericks was inspired by Psalm 139:9-10: "If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me." Leaning over his shoulder is the monkey god, Hanuman, who symbolizes loyalty, courage and strength. In the center of the sculpture is the elephant-headed god Ganesh. To his left are two figures kneeling in prayer. The head and neck of a bull form the left end of the sculpture. Considered a sacred animal in India, Hindus view the bull as a symbol of fertility and plenty. Fredericks gained appreciation of Indian culture while stationed in India during World War II. The large, powerful sea-god Poseidon’s right hand rests upon the body of a shark. His other arm is outstretched and the hand’s palm is downward, suggesting his control of the waves and all within his reach. Fredericks unites Poseidon with familiar creatures of the sea: porpoise, sturgeons, and tortoise to suggest the union of this god and his minions. Figure sculpture, American--20th century. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource After modeling the Torso of a Dancer in about 1934, Fredericks carved it in Belgian black marble for the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He subsequently used the original plaster model to create several bronze casts. Fredericks chose to leave the Torso with its raw bronze color. He finished the sculpture with a high degree of polish to emphasize the smooth forms, graceful lines, and strong muscles of the figure. The nude female form is a subject that has entranced artists since the dawn of time. Fredericks' treatment is typical of sculptors working during the Art Deco period when streamlined, elegant forms predominated, yet Fredericks' realistic but slightly idealized treatment of this traditional subject also illustrates his personal, mature style.
