According to Fredericks, the sculpture "represents this age of great interest, exploration and discovery in outer space...[and] the immensity, order and mystery of the universe.” The monumental central figure suggests a superhuman mythological being. Seated upon a ten-foot sphere, covered in a pattern of bright-star constellations, the figure holds two planets that he is sending off into space. The dynamic spiral orbit-form swirling around the sphere represents the speed and perpetual motion of space. Play of the water from numerous star-shaped sprays increases the feeling of movement. The full-scale casting of this sculpture is located in the South Court of the United States State Department Building in Washington, D.C. Located within the basin are four granite carvings depicting the great civilizations of the earth: Nordic, Eastern, Southern and Western cultures. Centered within is the 10 ½ foot sculptured bronze sphere representing the Universe as man has imagined it. Its design contains symbols of Eternal Life and Spirit derived from ancient myths. The bronze central figure towers 43 feet above the basin. Barbour Memorial, located on Belle Isle, an island park in Detroit, Michigan. Mounted 16 feet high on a granite pedestal, the bronze sculpture sits in a fountain basin. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Pencil on paper 14" x 16.5" Atop a wooded hill overlooking a small pond in Detroit’s Elmwood Cemetery stands a memorial to the late attorney turned industrialist Alvan Macauley. Commissioned by his wife and son soon after his death in 1952, the sculpture reflects Macauley’s love of nature and wildlife. On a simple granite pedestal sit two bronze geese as they take off into flight. Beneath their bodies, the tips of swamp rushes bend under the weight of the birds’ wings. According to the sculptor, waterfowl are a symbol of eternal life and this sculpture symbolizes “the ascendency of the soul no longer imprisoned by the body.” It is a fitting memorial to a man said to have deeply appreciated nature and “people who worked with their hands.” In addition to its original commission by the Macauley family, Flying Wild Geese also serves as a memorial to two former faculty members at Alma College. Commissioned by an Alma College alumni committee, the sculpture is set on a glacial sandstone pedestal in the college’s Monteith Library mall. At the sculpture’s dedication in 1971, Fredericks stated that “the birds in flight express freedom of inquiry and symbolized Michigan and its environment.” Found throughout the United States and the world, Flying Wild Geese is one of Marshall Fredericks’ most popular sculptures. Eaton Corporation Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Pencil on paper 12" x 17.75" The Eaton Manufacturing Company in Cleveland, Ohio commissioned this memorial in honor of the employees who died in World War II. A marble wall inscribed with the names of those employees who gave their lives for their country holds the bronze relief. The eagle is the most prominent element. The simplified details of the eagle's body and feathers are typical of Fredericks’ style. The face and obverse of the medallion are visible in the relief. The eagle’s talons grasp an olive branch and arrows signifying a capacity for both peace and war. On the obverse of the medallion, encircling the inscription is a laurel branch on the left and an oak branch on the right. These signify victory and strength. Fredericks also designed a medallion for the Eaton Manufacturing Corporation in 1948. Description An account of the resource Pencil on tracing paper 6" x 10.75" The Boy and Bear was commissioned by the J. L. Hudson Company for architect Victor Gruen’s Northland Shopping Center in Southfield, Michigan; at the time, Northland was only the second open-air pedestrian shopping mall in the United States. The bear is carved in limestone and the boy is cast in bronze and gold-plated. The Boy and Bear is located just outside one of the entrances to Macy’s, formerly Hudson’s department store. Three years after Fredericks started the sculpture, The Boy and Bear was dedicated in 1954. In a 1981 interview with the Detroit News art critic Joy Colby, Fredericks said, “People don’t like to go shopping in just a cement building, you know; they really don’t. If it has something that appeals to their eye and is more friendly and warm and maybe has a little fun connected with it I think they enjoy it more.” While there is no documented correlation between Rudyard Kipling’s boy (Mowgli) and bear (Baloo) in his famous novel The Jungle Book (1894) and Fredericks’ The Boy and Bear, most note great similarities. Fredericks love for children is clearly at the heart of this sculpture. The bear’s enormous body compared to the frail boy reminds the viewer of man’s special bond with animals. The bear with his massive head lowered, ears upright, brow furrowed and gentle smile reaches out to the boy and each viewer in friendship, and appears to offer to lend an ear to listen. Fredericks had created a special relationship with The Boy and Bear, but has also left open the possibility of relationships yet to come. The Boy and Bear was later cast in bronze and donated to Saginaw Valley State University where it resides today in the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum’s sculpture garden.
