McMorran Auditorium in Port Huron, Michigan commissioned the Night and Day Fountain as well as a gold anodized aluminum Sculptured Clock for the building. Completed two years before the fountain’s installation, Fredericks conceived the sculptures and clock as a unified design concept. In keeping with a long tradition in western art, the sculptor personified time with figures representing night and day. Night possesses long, smooth, graceful curves. Night floats upon a swan in flight, holding a small bird in her hand. In comparison to Night, Day is more angular with more pronounced muscles and veins in his arms and hands. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Fredericks first completed Siberian Ram in 1941, but a 24-inch tall sculpture installed in 1966 at the rose garden of the Henry Ford estate in Dearborn, Michigan is the first documented bronze cast. Fredericks carved a Siberian Ram in limestone on commission for the Birmingham-Bloomfield Bank which in 1972 donated the 30-inch tall stone sculpture to the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham, Michigan. In the late 1980s, Fredericks made molds from that sculpture and cast bronzes for his personal collection and for the museum. He created the 9-inch tall reduction in the mid-1990s. Sin in art Description An account of the resource In 1976, Fredericks enlarged these figures for the Midland Center for the Arts from the thirty-inch tall bronze version that he created while at Cranbrook in 1939. These seven figures are in the style of jamb statues found in the portals of Gothic cathedrals. Attached to columns, sculptors lengthened these figures with unnatural proportions. Fredericks' figures all conform to this elongated shape and he has amusingly balanced them atop small orbs. Although they are very similar in style, each one is individualized and possesses distinguishing attributes that in some way identifies them. Public sculpture, American Description An account of the resource The erection of The Spirit of Detroit at the City-County Building (now Coleman A. Young Municipal Center) in 1958 marked the formal completion of the structure whose construction began in 1951. Located in front of a white marble wall at the entrance to the building, the sculpture depicts the cultural and religious spirit of the Detroit community. At the time, The Spirit of Detroit was said to be the largest sculpture cast in Europe since the Renaissance period (1400 – 1600). It stands sixteen feet high and twenty-two feet across from fingertip to fingertip. On the Vermont marble wall behind the figure are the official seals of Wayne County, Michigan and the City of Detroit. Engraved on the wall is a verse from II Corinthians: ”Now the Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.” Designed to continue the thought indicated in the inscription on the wall, the sculpture is in the form of a kneeling man with outstretched arms. In his right hand he holds a father, mother and child representing family, which, according to Fredericks, is “probably the noblest human relationship.” In his left hand, the figure bears a sphere with rays emanating from it signifying deity. Fredericks chose the sphere because it is an object complete in itself with no beginning and no end. This sculpture took Fredericks four years to complete and meant a great deal to the sculptor, who once remarked, “I pray only that this work in some small way inspire those who see it.” Fredericks appears to have gotten his wish as the citizens of Detroit immediately embraced this giant figure as the city’s cultural icon by giving it the affectionate nickname, “The Jolly Green Giant.” The sculpture is also frequently dressed in local sporting teams’ jerseys during playoff action, and The Spirit of Detroit’s image appears as the central element in the logos of the city’s departments and services.
