An account of the resource
“The Expanding Universe Fountain†celebrates the nation's first exploration of outer space. According to Fredericks, the sculpture "represents this age of great interest, exploration and discovery in outer space...[and] the immensity, order and mystery of the universe.â€
The monumental central figure suggests a superhuman mythological being. Seated upon a ten-foot sphere, covered in a pattern of bright-star constellations, the figure holds two planets that he is sending off into space. The dynamic spiral orbit-form swirling around the sphere represents the speed and perpetual motion of space. Play of the water from numerous star-shaped sprays increases the feeling of movement.
The full-scale casting of this sculpture is located in the South Court of the United States State Department Building in Washington, D.C.
The fountain is also known as: "Man and the Expanding Universe"

An account of the resource
The Fountain, also known as the "Cleveland War Memorial", is composed of a large granite basin set with bronze plaques containing the names of men and women who gave their lives for their country. Located within the basin are four granite carvings depicting the great civilizations of the earth: Nordic, Eastern, Southern and Western cultures.
Centered within is the 10 ½ foot sculptured bronze sphere representing the Universe as man has imagined it. Its design contains symbols of Eternal Life and Spirit derived from ancient myths.
The bronze central figure towers 43 feet above the basin. This figure expresses the main theme of the Fountain: the spirit of mankind rising out of the flames of war and the destructive elements of life, reaching and ascending to a new understanding of life.
The Fountain took nineteen years to complete and is located at the Civic Center Mall A in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1936, Marshall Fredericks entered a national competition to design a memorial honoring Levi L. Barbour for Belle Isle, an island park in Detroit, Michigan. Barbour, a prominent lawyer who had been instrumental in the purchase of the island as a public park, bequeathed $20,000 to the city for the purpose of erecting some permanent structure on Belle Isle as a “continual hint to [his] fellow citizens to devote themselves to the benefit and pleasure of the public.â€
Open to all Detroit-area sculptors with approved credentials and others with a national reputation, the competition received entries from twenty-six sculptors. Chosen by a unanimous vote, Fredericks’ winning model featured a wounded or leaping antelope which “attempt[ed] to show the beauty in the excitement, or even death, of nature,†according to the artist. Fredericks surrounded the central figure with four smaller figures: a weasel, hawk, squirrel and pheasant, all native to Belle Isle and representing both the predatory and non-predatory aspects of nature.
Located in Belle Isle’s Rose Garden, the sculpture stands sixteen feet tall atop a granite pedestal. In its final form, Fredericks altered his original concept but the overall intent remained the same. Instead of an antelope, a wheeling bronze gazelle is the focal point of the fountain and the four smaller figures on the granite basin depict a hawk, grouse, rabbit and otter, representations of the island’s indigenous animals. At the memorial’s dedication in 1937, Fredericks said the fountain “is meant to express beauty in nature and its creation.â€
Considered by Fredericks to be his “first break,†the Belle Isle Competition garnered Fredericks a great deal of national attention and increased his public notoriety. With castings found throughout the United States and Europe, the Leaping Gazelle remains one of Fredericks’ most popular sculptures.

The Marshall M. Fredericks Collection consists of 200 linear feet of materials, including:
Correspondence: (13 linear feet) including personal, foreign ministry, and general correspondence as well as special letters and card received by Fredericks
Project (Job) Files: (7 linear feet) including correspondence between Fredericks and both sculpture commissioning clients and vendors that helped to fabricate the pieces
Subject Files: (24 linear feet) document Fredericks’ civic interests such as Disabled Americans’ Denmark meeting (DIADEM), Rebild National Park, and Danish Consular work, as well as fraternal organizations and the Marshall M Fredericks Sculpture Museum
Financial (30 linear feet) document the day-to-day operations of running a studio
Photographs: (25 linear feet) including photographs in a variety of sizes, negatives, and slides relating to Fredericks’ teaching career, projects, civic activities, and personal life

Description
An account of the resource
This sculpture represents Fredericks' interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's popular story, The Ugly Duckling. Unlike Fredericks' portrayals of other literary subjects, this sculpture illustrates not one moment in the story, but two.
Fredericks placed the unhappy duckling driven from place to place because of his ugliness at the base of the fountain. Located above is the beautiful swan he grew to be.
Fredericks emphasized the difference between the young and mature bird. The earthbound duckling is awkward and heavy, with stubby wings and tail while the swan soars overhead in an open form which appears almost weightless. Fredericks originally conceived this sculpture for the Danish Village retirement home in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
A bronze cast of this sculpture is located in Skælskør, Denmark where Hans Christian Andersen lived and penned “The Little Mermaid,†“The Ugly Duckling,†and many other children’s stories.

Description
An account of the resource
The Fountain, also known as the "Cleveland War Memorial", is composed of a large granite basin set with bronze plaques containing the names of men and women who gave their lives for their country. Located within the basin are four granite carvings depicting the great civilizations of the earth: Nordic, Eastern, Southern and Western cultures.
Centered within is the 10 ½ foot sculptured bronze sphere representing the Universe as man has imagined it. Its design contains symbols of Eternal Life and Spirit derived from ancient myths.
The bronze central figure towers 43 feet above the basin. This figure expresses the main theme of the Fountain: the spirit of mankind rising out of the flames of war and the destructive elements of life, reaching and ascending to a new understanding of life.
The Fountain took nineteen years to complete and is located at the Civic Center Mall A in Cleveland, Ohio.

Description
An account of the resource
Atop a wooded hill overlooking a small pond in Detroit’s Elmwood Cemetery stands a memorial to the late attorney turned industrialist Alvan Macauley. Commissioned by his wife and son soon after his death in 1952, the sculpture reflects Macauley’s love of nature and wildlife. On a simple granite pedestal sit two bronze geese as they take off into flight. Beneath their bodies, the tips of swamp rushes bend under the weight of the birds’ wings.
According to the sculptor, waterfowl are a symbol of eternal life and this sculpture symbolizes “the ascendency of the soul no longer imprisoned by the body.†It is a fitting memorial to a man said to have deeply appreciated nature and “people who worked with their hands.â€
In addition to its original commission by the Macauley family, Flying Wild Geese also serves as a memorial to two former faculty members at Alma College. Commissioned by an Alma College alumni committee, the sculpture is set on a glacial sandstone pedestal in the college’s Monteith Library mall. At the sculpture’s dedication in 1971, Fredericks stated that “the birds in flight express freedom of inquiry and symbolized Michigan and its environment.â€
Found throughout the United States and the world, Flying Wild Geese is one of Marshall Fredericks’ most popular sculptures. Many corporations, universities, cultural institutions and private individuals have chosen one of these sculptures for their collections.
