The Ford Empire relief was located in the Ford Auditorium constructed on the Detroit riverfront as the new home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra during 1955-1956. Perhaps the most notable feature of the building's interior was the expansive, curvilinear lobby adorned with some of Marshall Fredericks' most delicate and refined sculptures.
A 145-feet long filigreed metal mural, The Ford Empire, swept almost the entire length of the curved outer wall. On the balcony walls at either end of the foyer stood polished metal theatrical groupings of circus performers, musicians, harlequins, and dancers. Formed from literally thousands of pieces of copper, nickel, brass, stainless steel, and aluminum and plated with gold, zinc, and cadmium these pieces were hand-shaped, joined, plated, and polished.

Fredericks created the thirty-inch tall The Saints and Sinners in 1939 while at Cranbrook.
These seven figures are in the style of jamb statues found in the portals of Gothic cathedrals. Attached to columns, sculptors lengthened these figures with unnatural proportions. Fredericks' figures all conform to this elongated shape and he has amusingly balanced them atop small orbs.
Although they are very similar in style, each one is individualized and possesses distinguishing attributes that in some way identifies them. The theme of this piece seems to parody the Seven Deadly Sins with Christian characters.

This sculptural group of an Indian and four swans is located on the façade of the Milwaukee Public Museum. Fredericks said of the design that the swans, “complement the simple surface (of the wall) with just the right dignified accent…(they are) stylized, artistic representations of the natural swan (having worked) with numerous studies from live specimens.â€
The actual title according to Fredericks is “Algonquian Indian and (Whistling) Swansâ€. Fredericks stated that this work symbolizes the freedom and beauty of nature in the Great Lakes area.
Each of the four swans in the completed bronze commission weighs about ½ ton and the Indian weighs just over a ton.

This sculptural group of an Indian and four swans is located on the façade of the Milwaukee Public Museum. Fredericks said of the design that the swans, “complement the simple surface (of the wall) with just the right dignified accent…(they are) stylized, artistic representations of the natural swan (having worked) with numerous studies from live specimens.â€
The actual title according to Fredericks is “Algonquian Indian and (Whistling) Swansâ€. Fredericks stated that this work symbolizes the freedom and beauty of nature in the Great Lakes area.
Each of the four swans in the completed bronze commission weighs about ½ ton and the Indian weighs just over a ton.

Fredericks received this commission as a result of an honorable mention in a section of Fine Arts Competition at the World’s Fair in New York in 1939. He carved the original limestone relief that was placed in the public lobby of the Post Office in River Rouge, Michigan.
Because the automobile industry was the most important factor in the development of the Detroit area, the sculptor has chosen to depict one of the very early cars. The “horseless carriageâ€, with its two occupants, speeds along, leaving a trail of dust and smoke. Two children and a dog run delightedly beside the car while pigs and chickens flee in terror.
